A Guide to Recovering from Trauma

Anyone, anywhere young or old, can suffer from trauma. The emotional toll of things like accidents, surgical injuries, assaults and even terrorist attacks can totally debilitate a person and take a lifetime for them to get over, especially if they do not get the help they need to recover as soon after the traumatic incident as possible.

So, What Exactly is Traumatic Stress?

Traumatic stress is a common reaction to a traumatic event like a car crash, terrorist attack or hurricane. Incidents of this nature but the victims under immense stress, which can cause a whole host of symptoms, including shock, fear, anxiety, depression, flashbacks, anger and complete mental breakdown. That’s why it’s so important that victims of traumatic events, and witnesses to them, are helped through the aftermath.

If you believe you, or someone you are close to, is suffering from traumatic stress, here are some things you can do to aid recovery and get life back on track:

Limit Exposure to the Media

If you were involved in an incident that has led to widespread media coverage, it’s probably a good idea to switch off the TV, avoid the internet and even steer clear from social media for a while. It only takes one clip of the incident to start you panicking again, and that’s the last thing you need when you’re already suffering from the effects of trauma. Sit back and relax with a good book or spend time with good friends for a while instead of watching and reliving the traumatic event over and over again.

Accept the Way You Are Feeling

Trauma can cause all kinds of emotions that can take you by surprise. You might be very angry with the surgeon who messed up your operation to you could feel guilty because you survived an accident with your life while others lost theirs. You need to process and accept these emotions before you can ever hope to come to terms with them. So, feel whatever it is you need to feel and start to deal with those difficult emotions slowly at your own pace and only so far as you are comfortable to do so. If you try to force recovery, you will only make things worse.

See a Counselor

Seeing a professional to help you through your trauma will almost always be recommended. I know that for a lot of people, talking to a complete stranger about their innermost feelings isn’t exactly something that appeals, but it can really help, and with the help of a good lawyer legal representative from Medler Law Firm, you might be able to get the cost of your psychiatry bills paid for by the person(s) responsible for your current condition, depending on what happened to you and how it happened.

Good counselors will take things at your place and only ask you to share things you’re comfortable with, so you don’t have to worry about being pushed too far and making things worse if you do seek help.

Do Something Positive

When you’ve been through a traumatic experience, it’s normal to feel helpless about your situation and the events that took place. If you want to overcome this feeling and start to heal from your trauma, one of the best things you can do is take some positive action. Raise money for other victims, set up a charity, visit with other people who have been through traumatic experiences and you will feel more powerful and more in control of your life, which is definitely a positive when you’re trying to heal from trauma.

It’s probably one of the last things you want to do when you’re suffering from severe trauma, but exercising is great for boosting mental health. Even a brisk walk around the block will get the endorphins pumping, boost your mood and stop you from ruminating on the causes of your trauma. Apart from walking, yoga, running, basketball and dance are all good options for moving more when you’re suffering from traumatic stress.

Spend Time with Others

You might feel like isolating yourself following a traumatic event. In fact, you might want to hide away from the wider world completely, but to do so would be to give up on your recovery and sink further into your negative frame of mind. What you should do instead is get out there, spend some time laughing with friends and family, playing with children and petting dogs in the local park. Let yourself experience all of the wonderful things life has to offer, and you’ll feel a lot less stressed and more positive about life than you did before.

Take Steps to Reduce Stress

Reducing your stress levels should be a priority as you recover from trauma. Although a little bit of stress can be good for the average person, the amount of stress you will be under when you’ve had a traumatic experience will be off the scale. Good ways to relieve stress include listening to soothing music, taking a long hot bath and learning how to meditate, but you might have your own stress-busting go-to’s and they will be fine too.

Establish a Routine

Having a stable routine in place helps a lot of trauma victims to get back a sense of normality. Knowing what they will be doing from day to day, hour to hour and even minute to minute can be extremely comforting, so it is definitely worth a try. Just make sure that your routine includes a mix of essentials like work and chores and extravagances like meals with friends, trips to the cinema and time to work on hobbies.

Eat a Healthy Diet

The food you eat has a direct impact on your mood. If you eat healthy, nutritious foods including fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, you will feel much better than if you eat lots of sugar, chips and bad fats. So, eat a healthy diet if you want to get back on an even keel. You might have to go through a period of trial and error to see which foods make you feel good and which send you on a downward spiral, but it’ll be worth it.

I’ve been looking for something to help me get rid of the dark circles under my eyes. They have always been there but as I’m getting older they seem to be more defined now. I have learned that my dark circles can be caused by a number of things, not only lack of sleep. So I started looking around for remedies that may help minimize them or get rid of them. Here are a few I found that I want to start with.

  • Constant itching and rubbing due to skin conditions like eczema
  • Skin irritants in makeup products
  • Exposure to the sun (in the absence of a good sunscreen)

Alternative Ways to Give Your Home an Interior Improvement

Wood could be the answer

If you’re looking to give your home’s interior design a new lease of life, then you’re going to have to go against the grain. Specifically, you’re going to have to go against the gain and bring as much wood into it as possible. You see, an abundance of wood would give your home the interior improvement it has been crying out for by simply being something different.

The first wooden improvement you should be making t your homes interior design is timber cladding. Cladding your walls in timber will get to work right away in making the room, whatever room it is, look much bigger than it actually is. And when it comes to deciding exactly what room in your home should be clad in timber, let it be the hallway that your front door leads to; by doing this, you will create the illusion to any first-time guests in your home that it is bigger and grander than it may seem to be or they think it is. If taking advantage of such an illusion is your design dream, then make sure you chose to clad wide timber boards — horizontally or vertically — up the stairs.

Or if you’d rather give your home an interior improvement in regards to its grandeur, rather than its size, then consider having wooden crown molding fitted and your wooden furniture refurbished. By doing so you will be able to make your home look definitively high-end, even when it is blatantly not. When it comes to the latter, consider having a professional in the painting and decorating sector, such as Rise Painting interior painting, paint your wooden cabinets back to life and give them a new lease of life. When this is done your wooden furniture wouldn’t look out of place in a Regency-style stately home, seriously! And, whilst you’re at it, why not spend big and invest in some lacquer coated timber furniture? By doing so you will be taking your desire for a grand design within your home to the absolute peak of which it can go.

And, bare in mind, the wooden look sits perfectly with unconventional Bohemian decor styles; if that’s not enough to sway you towards taking the wooden route, then what is?

Minimalist designs make a big impact

Minimalist designs may never have crossed your mind as being a style that would suit your home, but you’ll find that they probably would! Why? Because minimalist styles can fit — both specially and style wise — in any home.

Specifically, the minimalist design is best suited to the bedroom. It is best suited to the bedroom because, typically, this is going to be a room that easily looks overcrowded, even when it really isn’t, because of how much the bed takes up in it. So, if you want to truly embrace a minimalist makeover in your home, then do it in your bedroom. Specifically, don’t be afraid to suspend tables and hand bedside cabinets from your ceiling rather than have them sit on the floor. Yes, you heard that right: have tables and cabinets be suspended and hung from your ceiling. By doing so you would be truly embracing the minimalist look and saving an abundance of space in your bedroom at the same time.

And to further this space saving and style inducing, you should seek to keep not only your bedroom but your whole home as clean and as tidy as possible. This means making sure everything has a home. This means ensuring laundry is not left to rot on the floor. This means hiding wires and tucking them away. And this certainly means no hoarding! No, hoarding is the enemy of the minimalist, so make sure everything that serves as no importance to you and your family is gotten rid of, pronto!

Don’t have contempt for the contemporary

Contemporary styles don’t just consist of styles that are seen as ‘in’ or even ‘modern’. No, contemporary styles are futuristic. Contemporary styles consist of everything from LED lighting to silver chrome finishes. Contemporary styles include decor that wouldn’t look out of place on a spaceship!

When it comes to contemporary styles, they are best embraced in the kitchen simply because of how many high-tech appliances are found in there. And, when it comes to knowing where to start when giving the kitchen a contemporary style boost, it is best, to begin with, the lighting. And, one contemporary piece of light fitting that should be attracting you is theColoredSHAPE; this should be attracting you because it is completely futuristic in its design yet it pays homage to the classic bedside table lamp shade style (it does so because it mimics the silhouette of this look but it is wall mounted). Other contemporary pieces of lighting that should be on your radar are any that are LED because LED is the way to light up any contemporarily styled room.

But it’s not just the lighting of your kitchen that you should be paying attention to when it comes to giving it a contemporary makeover. No, you should also target all the day-to-day appliances found in there. For instance, you should most certainly replace your old bread bin with the sleek and stylish Space Master; by doing so you will be embracing the contemporary whilst still yielding to the demands of everyday kitchen usage.

Whatever alternative stylistic choice you go with when it comes to giving your home and interior improvement, just make sure you go all in with it. Well, if you go in on any of the styles above half-heartedly, your home will just look tacky and, frankly, unfinished. So, it’s not just about being brave enough to choose an alternative style for your home, it’s about being determined enough to see the job though!

Home Made Bubbles

I’ve been looking around for more non-candy ideas to put in my boy’s Easter basket! Here is another awesome idea that they would love and use every day, homemade bubbles. Not only will I use this for Easter but probably once a week, my boys love playing with bubbles. Charlie likes to see how many bubbles he can make come out at once, and he likes to catch two bubbles and make the connect.

Simple Homemade Bubble Solution:

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of dish soap

Simply mix the ingredients together until the sugar is totally dissolved.  Then, after done playing, store in an air-tight container.

The next recipe requires an ingredient that is a bit more “rare”, but the bubbles from this solution are a bit better, but, like I said, they weren’t terrible with the first recipe.

Little Less Simple Homemade Bubble Solution

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 Tablespoons dish soap or laundry soap
  • 1 Tablespoon Glycerin
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Once again, simply mix the ingredients together until all of the sugar is completely dissolved.  Then, once you are done using it, store it in an air-tight container.

Why Is Insomnia So Rampant

The Room

First things first, how well is your room set up for sleep? You need to make sure that space is comfortable enough to be able to sleep in for extended periods of time, and that there are as few distractions as possible. Actually controlling distractions can be hard or impossible, but you can instead wear a sleeping mask and choose right earplugs first. This will essentially block out distractions, making the quality of your sleep much better. You’ll also need to make sure that your bed is as comfortable as possible – an obvious point, but one which is worth repeating given the amount that people seem to overlook it.

The Routine

It’s worth taking a look at your evening routine, to check whether you could be doing anything more sensible in order to help you sleep. A good example of something you might want to change is if you find yourself looking at screens a lot in the evening. Using screens from tablets or smartphones or laptops can actually inhibit the production of melanin in the body, the chemical that is used to determine when it’s time to sleep. So overusing screens can mean that your body is unaware it is time to shut down. Consider limiting your screen use in the evenings if you want to sleep better. You might be amazed at what a difference this simple change can really make.

The Diet

Diet plays a huge role in all of this as well. There are a few particularly obvious things which you should look out for first. For instance, try to limit your caffeine intake as much as you can. The more the better, but at least avoid having any caffeine after midday if you can. Caffeine can affect your sleep for up to twelve hours after taking it, so this is important. Similarly, avoid alcohol. While it might feel as though alcohol helps you sleep, the truth is that it is more likely to cause you to wake up during the night. You should also try to generally get a good balance of fruit and vegetables, and not overdo it on the red meat if you want to sleep deeply and for longer.

The above three will ensure that you sleep much more effectively and for longer, so make sure you do not overlook these if you want to improve your quality of sleep fast.

Get A Granny-Nanny

We all have that moment when we search the internet for some help, someone who can assist with the kids for just a couple of mornings a week. That would be enough. Well, why not make that someone a granny-nanny. These are semi-retired women that typically don’t have family close by. Nurturing people that will cherish everything you do. They are people that love baking, gardening, reading, coloring-in, and they know how to ace homework, while also cherishing the wonders of children. They are people that want to be involved with children, that’s the key and, in return, you’ll be relieved of some of the stress. You can do those errands you needed to do or just grab a pinch of personal time.

Schedule Your Personal Time

Yeah, this may sound sad, at least to begin with, but if scheduling in some personal time in the same way you would schedule an appointment is the only way you’ll get it, then do it. Personal time is so important. Seeing friends, getting that soft tissue massage you promised your doctor you would get, seeing friends for a coffee, going for a run, having your nails done, or just sitting in a quiet park. Whatever floats your boat on that day. Don’t feel guilty about this either. We all need a bit of peace and quiet, and your family will thrive if you grant yourself that space. Just make sure your family knows that these are appointments, one’s that you can’t miss.

Bring A PA Into The Family

This idea of having a personal assistant to help in your personal life can be so rewarding, for everyone, especially if you are a mum that balances working with being a mum. The more you accept them into your family the better it will be too, not least because they will have such an important part to play. The reason we are referring to them as a PA is because that will help you distinguish their role a bit more. In the same way, you would lay out a set of tasks for an assistant at work, do the same for them each morning. Then they will know exactly what you would like doing, what principles you cherish and what is important to you, like the operation #dontforget you are championing. All this can be achieved while they also ensure your kids laugh from the moment they get picked up from school to the moment you get back from work, and you won’t feel stressed about the tasks that haven’t been done because, well, they will have been done. A PA is a right-hand person, someone you can trust no end, so why not have someone like that to help with your children?

Why You Should Visit Your Dentist

Ah, the dreaded D-word! Not many of us enjoy going to the dentist, probably because of terrible childhood experiences we had when sat in the dental chair. “This won’t hurt a bit,” they tell us, before jabbing a needle in our gums. Tooth extractions, fillings, root canal treatments… surely it would be easier to deal with the pain rather than suffer at the hands of a dentist. Well, as anybody who has ever suffered from a toothache will tell you, the answer is ‘no.’ The dentist is a better alternative, and thankfully technology has advanced enough to make the experience reasonably painless.

So, if you have been putting off going to the dentist, here are the reasons why you may need to make an appointment right away.

You have tooth pain

Regular readers of this site will know the importance of self-care, but if you have been guzzling down sugary treats, you are going to get tooth decay. Hence the pain. Brushing your teeth for ages isn’t going to get rid of it. Flossing for the first time in months is not going to ease your agony. Unfortunately, if tooth pain persists for more than a couple of days, you are going to need treatment. Your dentist will get to the root cause of your pain and then deal with it.

Your teeth are crooked

Afraid to smile because of your crooked teeth? That’s a shame, as your smile can do much for your beautiful face. From impressing a potential employer to dazzling a first date, your smile has the power to give you confidence. But not if your teeth are wonkier than a rickety old bridge! Thankfully, your dentist can help. We know what you’re thinking, and you’re right, we are going to recommend a brace, but they aren’t the horrible metal contraptions you may be imagining. By going to the right dentist, you can get Invisalign treatment, braces that are comfortable to wear and invisible to the naked eye. Regain your smile and see a dentist today!

Your teeth are sensitive

Ice cream is amazing, but not when it causes you to yelp in pain. A cup of tea is relaxing, but not when it causes you to grimace in pain. If your teeth are sensitive to anything that is hot and cold, you are probably experiencing one of the symptoms of tooth decay. The hot and cold temperatures are hitting the nerve in your tooth, which is causing you to experience sudden bursts of pain. You are going to need a filling, so book an appointment before the decay spreads, as you may need to have the tooth removed if you don’t take action early.

You have bad breath

Are people avoiding you? Does your partner flee whenever you move in for a kiss? It’s probably because you have bad breath. Now, while brushing your teeth and taking mouthwash helps, if the problem persists, you probably have gingivitis. Again, seeing your dentist is important, as gingivitis can lead to other, more serious health conditions.

Even if you don’t have the issues mentioned above, it is still worth seeing your dentist on a regular basis. There may be problems you aren’t aware of, so the dentist will take care of them before you suffer the consequences. Believe us, once you do get a toothache, you will wish you had taken our advice earlier!

Rainbow Fruit Roll-Ups

With Easter right around the corner, I’ve been looking for healthy snacks to put in the boys Easter baskets. I try to limit their candy as much as possible,  I was excited when I found this rainbow fruit roll-up recipe. I did a test run today, and the boys loved them!

Repeat again with mango, adding final teaspoon lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon sugar.
